Land acquisition and structural evaluation for the Thiruvananthapuram segment of the Coastal Highway from Pozhiyoor to Kappil have begun, with the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) targeting tendering by December 2025 and construction by January 2026.
The 620–650 km Thiruvananthapuram–Kasaragod corridor, initially estimated at Rs 6,500 crore, has seen cost escalations due to project delays and surging land values. KRFB has submitted a revised cost estimate to the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) for approval. Opposition from local fishing communities, concerned about livelihood loss and environmental impacts, has caused delays, prompting social impact studies and compensation negotiations.
A rehabilitation survey by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) revealed most fishermen prefer monetary compensation over relocation. In Thiruvananthapuram, the project is divided into four reaches, with challenging segments requiring special handling.
