The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has begun work on the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension, a 13.9 km, fully elevated six-lane corridor.
Once completed, the project will reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Thane to just 25-30 minutes and help alleviate congestion on the heavily trafficked Eastern Express Highway (EEH). The extension will connect Anand Nagar in Thane to Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, with key junctions at Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd, and Ghatkopar.
Designed for high-speed, safe travel, the project will merge with the Anand Nagar-Saket Elevated Road and provide further connectivity to the Samruddhi Motorway. In line with sustainability efforts, MMRDA has realigned parts of the route to save 127 pink trumpet trees, with plans to plant 4,175 compensatory trees. Currently, preliminary surveys, piling work, and geotechnical investigations have been completed, with pier casting still in progress.
