In a bid to ease vehicular congestion, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has a proposed cable car transport system between Thane and Borivli.
The proposed cable car transport will run through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). The gondola cab facility is anticipated to transport approx 4,000 passengers in each direction during peak hours.
As part of the trial, the transportation will start and end at either ends of the forest area. The plan will reduce a total of 30 minutes from around two hours of the present travel time.
The state expects to prioritise this project from the other plan of constructing a tunnel under the SGNP which will incur huge costs and take several years.
The cost of the proposed cable car transport is unlikely to exceed Rs 1,500 crore and will be carried out within two years. Following the initial approval, a detailed project report will be prepared by the official.
