First proposed in the 1967 Development Plan, the Madh-Versova bridge is finally nearing construction, with the BMC awaiting final clearances from the Forest Department and the Bombay High Court.
The construction is expected to begin by October 2025. The 2.06-km bridge will span the Versova creek, connecting the Madh and Versova jetties. The bridge, estimated to cost between Rs 2,395 crore and Rs 3,984 crore, will dramatically cut travel time and also serve as a connector to the Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road, offering improved connectivity for northern suburbs.
The bridge features a cable-stayed design to reduce environmental impact, especially on mangroves, with a 100-mtrs.-high stainless steel pylon built to withstand coastal conditions. Currently, locals rely on a five-minute boat ride or a 90-minute, 22-km road journey.
Adjustments in alignment were made to minimise disruption to local fishing communities. Local residents have long awaited this project, citing easier access to hospitals, schools, and essential supplies in Versova.
