Maharashtra State Power Generation Co
(Mahagenco) -- the power generation arm of the erstwhile Maharashtra State
Electricity Board -- has proposed to set up a 1,600 MW imported coal-based power
project in Ratnagiri district. Mahagenco has begun the process of acquiring 500
ha of land at Dhopave near Guhagar-Dabhol in Ratnagiri district.
Speaking to ProjectsToday, officials
from Mahagenco said that National Environmental Engineering Institute (NEERI)
has been entrusted with the task of preparing the environmental impact
assessment report that is expected to be ready by end-September 2006. The same
will be submitted to the Central and state governments, with a likelihood of
getting clearance by January 2007.
The project will be set up in two
units of 800 MW each, with a total investment of Rs.8,000 crore. Mahagenco, in
May 2006, had floated global EOIs for shortlisting long-term suppliers of
imported coal. The indicative requirement was 5 million tonnes per year for the
proposed Dhopave project. The supplier, who still has to be shortlisted, will
also be expected to supply coal, for blending purpose, to other upcoming
Mahagenco power projects.
