The governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat have jointly acquired coal mining blocks in Macha Katta and Mahanadi coal blocks
in Orissa to ensure continuous supply of fuel to their power plants. This coal mine will ensure supply of coal to power plants in the states
for at least 20-25 years.
Due to acute power deficit in
Maharashtra, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. (MSEDCL) is planning
to add 18,500 MW in the next five years and MahaGenco will be adding 7,500 MW of
which 90 per cent of these power projects will be coal-based.
MSEDCL is also planning to invest
Rs.12,500 crore for improving power distribution and these projects will be
executed on a turn key basis and tenders are likely to be invited by July 2006.
The project will be funded through a Rs.2,000 crore loan from PFC and around
Rs.5,000 crore from Rural Electrification Corpn.
