The Maharashtra State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved a significant redevelopment plan for MHADA housing projects in Mumbai and its suburbs.
The initiative targets colonies covering 20 acres or more, focusing on replacing old, deteriorating buildings with modern, safe, and affordable homes. MHADA’s Mumbai division, which built 56 housing colonies in the 1950s and 1960s, will now spearhead the transformation of nearly 5,000 cooperative societies. The plan aims to address the issues of cramped living spaces, outdated facilities, and poor infrastructure faced by residents. New developments will feature modern amenities like lifts, spacious parking, gardens, gyms, and schools.
MHADA will oversee 114 projects, ensuring safety and design standards, with the project expected to significantly improve urban infrastructure. This policy could become a model for large-scale redevelopment in other cities.
