The government of Maharashtra has granted financial assistance of Rs 100 crore for developing the memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea, at Marine Drive in Mumbai.
Before inviting bids for the project, the Maharashtra government will take formal approval from the Ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) for the project plan.
Soon, the state cabinet will invite bids from international firms for the project, once it receives the requisite approvals.
On 4 February 2014, the Maharashtra government had received approval from the National Environmental Engineering and Research Institute, Nagpur (NEERI) which had conducted the environment impact assessment (EIA) study for the project.
As per the EIA study, the developer will have to do a few more studies such as traffic dispersal, boating facilities at the jetty, and an evacuation plan in case of disaster.
Besides, an international design competition has also been planned for the project. The memorial, estimated to cost Rs 300 crore, will be developed on a 16 ha rock.
