The Maharashtra government has
plans to develop a new tourist destination near Mahabaleshwar, through public-private
partnership.
The ‘New Mahabaleshwar’
development plan aims at promoting leisure, adventure as well as religious tourism.
The picturesque region around Mahabaleshwar provides many peaks, hilltops,
valleys, waterfalls, and houses forests, lakes, dams and tourist centres of
natural and historical importance.
The project envisages the
development of a new hilly land spread over 372 km2 and provide
basic infrastructure facilities such as roads, water supply and electricity.

Private entrepreneurs would then
be invited for establishing the aforementioned facilities.
The project, estimated to entail
an investment of Rs.680 crore, would be implemented through a new company, ‘New
Mahabaleshwar Development Co’, which would have participation from Maharashtra
State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Maharashtra Tourism Development
Corporation (MTDC) and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
MSRDC has been appointed as the nodal agency for the project.
