Maruti Suzuki India has planned an outlay of Rs 2,000 crore for research &
development activities and to ramp its existing facilities this fiscal.
The major portion of the proposed investment is likely to be used in
expanding capacity of its new KB-series engine facility at Gurgaon, Haryana
which presently manufactures 2.4 lakh KB-series engines per annum. The new
engine series is used only on the 'A Star' as of now, but Maruti will gradually
strap this engine on to the new models as well as existing cars.
A part of the planned outlay will also be used to upgrade the Gurgaon
car-making facility, from which all the old models - M800, Omni, Alto, WagonR,
and Zen Estilo, besides others - roll out.
