Megha Engineering & Infrastructure (MEIL) has secured a Rs 12,800-crore order from Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) for the construction of two 700 MW nuclear reactors - Kaiga Units 5 and 6, in Karnataka. This marks the first time a private sector company has been awarded a nuclear power project in India, making it a landmark development in the country’s energy sector.
The contract was awarded through the quality-cum-cost-based selection (QCBS) method. MEIL emerged as the lowest bidder when the bids were opened in June 2024. The Kaiga expansion project will significantly bolster India’s nuclear power capacity and demonstrates growing confidence in private sector participation in critical infrastructure projects.
This contract represents MEIL’s formal entry into the nuclear energy sector, expanding its already diverse presence across sectors such as power, water, hydrocarbons, irrigation, defence, and oil and gas rigs.
