The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has developed 12,349 km of national highways in 2023-24, the second highest in terms of its performance, so far. In 2020-21, MoRTH had reached its previous peak by constructing 13,327 km of national highways.
The ministry awarded 8,581 national highway projects in 2023-24. National highways of 10,331 km were constructed in 2022-23 against 10,457 km in 2021-22. Highways of 10,237 km were built in 2019-20. Going forward, the focus of road construction projects will be on access-controlled expressways.
In terms of utilisation, the ministry spent 99.98 percent of its revised capital expenditure allocation of Rs 2,64,525 crore last year. In FY24, the total capital expenditure crossed Rs 3.01 trillion with remaining coming from the private sector. In 2024-25, the capex allocation in the interim budget is Rs 2.72 trillion.
The government has launched a pilot project to provide cashless treatment to road accident victims with financial support of up to Rs 1.5 lakh.
