The Mumbai-Pune Expressway's missing link project in Lonavala is nearing completion, offering relief to commuters who often face heavy traffic, especially during weekends and festive seasons.
The 13.3 km stretch, which cuts through hills and valleys, will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by up to 30 minutes. The project includes two tunnels (8.9 km and 1.7 km long) and two cable-stayed bridges, reducing congestion caused by the narrow road and tourist traffic in Lonavala. The viaduct connecting the tunnels was one of the toughest challenges, but it has now been finished. The missing link is expected to open soon, with final touch-ups and lane widening near Khopoli.
Initially scheduled for completion in May, the project will now be fully operational by March 2026. Once open, the Lonavala bypass will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune to around 2.5 hours, improving travel convenience.
