The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced trial runs on a newly constructed tunnel that connects the Dwarka Expressway to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and NH-48.
The trial, scheduled for at least three days, is intended to ease congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and offer commuters a faster, alternative route between Gurgaon, Dwarka, and the airport. Stretching 5.1 km, the tunnel is India's longest and widest urban road tunnel, comprising an eight-lane, 3.6 km main segment to IGI Airport and a two-lane, 1.5 km segment linking to NH-48 towards Gurugram.
The tunnel is adorned with vibrant murals reflecting the cultures of states such as Punjab, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, and Delhi, as well as depictions of national landmarks and figures like Mahatma Gandhi. The project is part of Phase-IV of the Rs 9,000-crore, 29-km Dwarka Expressway, which spans 18.9 km in Haryana and 10.1 km in Delhi. Officials expect the tunnel’s opening to alleviate traffic and streamline connectivity between key zones including Vasant Kunj, Gurugram, Alipur, and Dwarka.
