The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been working to improve safety on the Pune-Solapur national highway by constructing underpasses at seven accident-prone locations within the Pune division.
The project, which began one-and-a-half years ago, aims to reduce the risk of accidents, with three underpasses already completed and four more under construction. According to Sanjay Kadam, Project Director, NHAI Pune, “The ministry of road transport and highways has formulated a special policy to reduce accidents on national highways. As part of this policy, underpasses are being constructed to eliminate accident-prone zones. In the Pune division, work at three locations has been completed, while construction at the remaining four locations is underway.”
The underpasses, designed with a width of 30 mtrs. and a height of 5.5 mtrs., will allow local traffic to pass safely beneath the main highway, preventing dangerous crossings. Each underpass costs about Rs 20 crore, with the entire project estimated at Rs 150 crore.
