National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be developing wayside amenities at more than 600 locations on national highways and expressways by 2024-25. The aim is to enhance the user experience by providing adequate facilities for rest and refreshment to the commuters.
The wayside amenities will include a fuel station, electric charging facilities, a food court, retail shops and a bank ATM at specific locations. These developed every 40-60 km along the current and upcoming national highways and expressways.
NHAI has already awarded 160 sites for the development of wayside amenities, out of about 150 were awarded in the last two years. Another 150 such locations, including, greenfield corridors like Amritsar-Bathinda -Jamnagar Corridor, Delhi - Mumbai Expressway and Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, are planned to be awarded in the next financial year.
At present, 75 wayside amenities sites across multiple brownfield and greenfield corridors are open for bidding. The development will be across eight states which, includes 27 sites in Rajasthan, 18 in Madhya Pradesh, and three such sites in Himachal Pradesh.
