National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) awaits final clearance from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) to begin commissioning three units—each of 250 MW, at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, located near North Lakhimpur on the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border.
The project is the largest hydroelectric development ever undertaken in India, with a total capacity of 2,000 MW. NHPC had previously announced plans to initiate commissioning of the first three units by June 2025, with the remaining five units—also of 250 MW each, slated for phased completion by May 2026.
The Subansiri project is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme with water storage capabilities and is expected to generate 7,421.59 million units of electricity annually in a 90 percent dependable year. Once fully operational, it will significantly boost power supply in the region and contribute to India’s clean energy goals.
