As part of its strategy of doing away with 540 MW reactors
altogether, Nuclear Power Corporation has decided to upgrade the first 2 x 540
MW pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) Tarapur Atomic Power Project (TAPP
III & IV) to 700 MW. The project, which is targeted for completion by 2007,
is in a full-fledged designing state at present.
For the Tenth Plan (2002-07), the
government has provided Rs.25,000 crore to the Department of Atomic Energy.
These funds would be used to cover NPCIL’s commitment to eight reactors that
are under construction. Besides, the corporation would also undertake
pre-project work on four reactors (two of 1,000 MW and two of 500 MW).
NPCIL has an overall target of reaching
a generation capacity of 10,000 MW by 2011. Thereafter, it would add 1,000 MW
of capacity to reach 20,000 MW by 2020.
The
existing operating power stations of the Company are Tarapur Atomic Power
Station Units-1&2 (TAPS-1&2) (Maharashtra), Rajasthan Atomic Power Station
Unit-2-4 (RAPS-2,3&4) (Rajasthan), Madras Atomic Power Station
Units-1&2 (MAPS-1&2) (Tamil Nadu), Narora Atomic Power Station
Units-1&2 (NAPS-1&2) (UP), Kakrapar Atomic Station Units-1&2
(KAPS-1&2) (Gujarat) and Kaiga Atomic Power station (Kaiga-1&2)
(Karnataka).
