NTPC Ltd is planning to commission
nuclear power projects with a total capacity of 2,000 MW till 2013-14 from the
original commissioning year 2017. The company has already sought the
government's approval for its foray into nuclear power.
The company has revised its capacity
addition plan from 17,000 MW to 21,000 MW plus till 2007-12 of which nearly
2,200 MW will come from hydro projects, 4,600 MW from gas-based projects and
rest from coal.
NTPC has already tied up with BHEL to
bid for the 4,000 MW ultra mega power project at Sasan (Madhya Pradesh) and will
also implement pit-head coal-based projects with 4,000 MW capacity each in
Orissa and Chhattisgarh. As far as coal requirement is concerned, the company
will need a supply of 119 million tonnes of coal of which 5 million tonnes will
be imported through state trading.
