The Nagaland Cabinet has taken key decisions on oil and natural gas exploration in the state, reaffirming its commitment to proceed under the rights guaranteed by Article 371A of the Constitution.
Government spokesperson and minister K G Kenye said that while the issue had become contentious and reached the courts, the matter is now cleared to move forward following the withdrawal of the case by the concerned organisation. The Cabinet emphasised that all resources, including petroleum and natural gas, belong to the landowners and people of Nagaland, with the state acting on their mandate and consent. The Minister noted that while petroleum and gas are Central subjects in other states, Nagaland has distinct rights over its resources.
The Cabinet also constituted a sub-committee under the Political Affairs Committee to coordinate with the Centre on matters including exploration and related regulatory issues, reflecting the state government’s proactive approach to unlocking its energy potential.
