Nagpur is set to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility through a Rs 147.2 crore initiative under Phase 1 of its Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).

The project will construct 156?km of new, encroachment-free footpaths with a minimum width of 1.8?m and height of 150?mm, ensuring continuous pedestrian routes equipped with tabletop crossings at road intersections.

Of the total outlay, Rs 131?crore is dedicated to footpath construction, while Rs 12.8?crore will fund 32 at-grade pedestrian crossings at key junctions to facilitate safer street-level crossings. Additionally, Rs 3.4?crore has been allocated for 17 grade-separated facilities - foot overbridges with lifts and escalators, and hybrid subways featuring proper drainage, to serve high-footfall areas without impeding vehicular flow.

Currently, only 54 percent of Nagpur’s 650?km road network includes footpaths, far below the 664?km recommended  in CMP 2018. Prepared by MahaMetro in partnership with RITES, the CMP also addresses road improvements, flyovers, and public transport enhancements.
