Under the Namami Gange Mission Phase II, the operationalisation of five sewage treatment projects in the third quarter of FY 2025–26 marks a significant advancement in efforts to combat pollution and rejuvenate rivers.
These projects, which enhance sewage treatment capacities in key urban areas, bring the total capacity under the mission to 3,976 MLD, with 173 sewage treatment plants (STPs) now operational. Notable projects include a five MLD STP in Shuklagunj, Uttar Pradesh, benefiting around three lakh people and preventing untreated sewage from entering the River Ganga. In Agra, two STPs with capacities of 31 MLD and 35 MLD were commissioned, improving sanitation for nearly 25 lakh residents. Varanasi’s 55 MLD STP at Assi–BHU, which will serve 18 lakh people, plays a crucial role in protecting the Ganga.
Similarly, a 30 MLD STP in North Barrackpore, West Bengal, will benefit 2.2 lakh people. These efforts contribute to cleaner rivers and improved urban sanitation.
