A new high-capacity transmission hub is being developed at Bornagar in Assam under the North Eastern States Strengthening Scheme (NESS), aimed at reducing the Northeast's reliance on the flood-prone Bongaigaon substation.
Currently, the Bongaigaon substation acts as the primary gateway for power from mainland India, but its location in a flood-prone area poses a significant risk to the region's power supply, especially in Assam. The Bornagar power hub, spanning Gadaapith and Bhogpur villages in Bajali district, will initially operate as a 400 kV switching station, with plans for future upgrades. It will provide an alternative power route by re-routing parts of existing transmission lines from Bongaigaon to Balipara and Alipurduar.
The project, part of NESS, aims to strengthen transmission infrastructure, improve grid reliability, and reduce transmission losses. This will help reduce power procurement costs, benefiting consumers in the long run.
