The MMRDA has reportedly called off its plans for 17 skywalks for various
reasons, including opposition by locals and failure to get timely permission
from the Indian Railways.
The cancelled skywalks include those planned at
Mahalaxmi,
Mahim,
Mulund East, Mulund West,
Parel,
Sewri,
Reay Road and Khada Parsi.
So far, the MMRDA has fully commissioned seven skywalks and 10 others have
been partially opened to pedestrians. According to sources, now only 34 skywalks
are likely to be constructed. Work on these skywalks is likely to be completed
by 31 May 2010.
One of the reasons for the cancellation is that the alignment overlaps that
of Metro projects, for which a draft DPR was recently submitted.
