On 04 September, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong virtually inaugurated Phase II of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), operated by Singapore’s PSA International.
The Rs 1.3 billion (SGD 1.7 billion) expansion doubles BMCT’s handling capacity to 4.8 million TEUs, making it India’s largest container terminal and Singapore’s biggest FDI project in the country. Spread over 200 hectares, the terminal features 2,000 mtrs. of continuous quay, enabling berthing of multiple mega-vessels simultaneously.
With six DFC-compatible rail tracks linking 63 inland container depots, the project strengthens multimodal connectivity under PM Gati Shakti. The facility has generated over 1,500 skilled roles and will be operated by a trained workforce from the Gateway Terminal. Sustainability is central, with renewable-powered equipment and plans to electrify diesel assets.
India and Singapore also agreed to develop Green and Digital Shipping Corridors, advancing greener fuel supply chains and faster port clearances, further reinforcing bilateral maritime cooperation and India’s global trade position.
