Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Dahod Locomotive Manufacturing Workshop today during a two-day visit to Gujarat, marking a major milestone under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 21,405 crore by the Ministry of Railways, the facility is expected to generate employment of around 10,000, both directly and indirectly. The production unit, with an annual design capacity of 120 locomotives, calable to 150—will manufacture high-powered engines capable of hauling 4,600 tonne, significantly enhancing India’s freight capacity and reducing reliance on imports. The rapid construction of the factory has been highlighted as it was completed in a record three years since the foundation was laid in 2022.
Over the next decade, the plant aims to roll out 1,200 locomotives, reinforcing India’s manufacturing capabilities and self-sufficiency goals. Additionally, PM Modi will unveil railway infrastructure projects worth Rs 2,287 crore, raising total sector investment to Rs 23,692 crore. These include line doublings, electrifications, and gauge conversions. The event will also see the dedication of India’s first 9,000 HP electric locomotive manufactured domestically, underscoring a transformative step in freight modernisation.
