POSCO is likely to sign an agreement with Uttam Galva Steel (UGSL) to set up an integrated steel plant at Satarda in Maharashtra.
POSCO is planning to set up a three million tpa integrated steel plant in Maharashtra. For the project, Uttam Galva, a leading cold-rolled and galvanised steel maker in eastern India, has earmarked about 1,700 acre it owns at Satarda. Uttam Galva has clear possession of the land and the site is close to port facilities and iron ore mines in Goa. A preliminary discussion has already been held for the purpose. This move will also see two global steel makers, Posco and ArcelorMittal, which holds 33.80 per cent stake in Uttam Galva, coming together in a steel project in India.
This apart, POSCO’s integrated steel plant located in Orissa is facing doldrums due to land acquisition and clearances problems. The environmental clearances have been cancelled for the project by Paul committee. The Paul committee had submitted its report to the MoEF in October 2012. However the report has not yet been made public, that the project proposal may have to undergo a complete change in the coming days, including layout, study of its impact on the environment, livelihood of people, water requirement and waste disposal management. POSCO proposed to set up 12-tpa integrated steel plant near Paradip in Orissa. The company initially needed 4,004 acre, but later scaled down its immediate requirement to 2,700 acre to start the phase I, comprising two modules of four million tpa each. Of the total parcel of land the Government of Orissa has acquired 1,700 acre for the project and of which 540 acre handed over only on paper to the company. The company does not have physical possession of any land.
