Construction work for the development of a new road project from Panjapur to Karur Bypass in Tamil Nadu has been divided into three packages for early completion. The project is estimated to cost about Rs 340 crore.
As part of the project, an elevated carriageway will come up on Tiruchi-Dindigul highway near Karumandapam. The carriageway will be nine mtrs. wide and will be laid on the eastern bund of the Koraiyar and the Kudamuriti via Kuzhumayi Amman Temple and Woraiyur. The project intends to decongest the traffic in Tiruchi and strengthen the river banks to avoid breaches and flooding during monsoon.
According to the project plan, the upcoming road will be constructed from Panjapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai highway, where a new integrated bus terminus (IBT) is being built, to the Tiruchi-Karur highway along the eastern bunds of Koraiyar and the Kudamuriti rivers. The length of the proposed road is anticipated to be approx. 12 km from the bus terminal to Karur Bypass.
The project is in the final stage of clearance from the state government. Of these three, Package-I will cost nearly Rs 87 crore, Package-II would cost Rs 80 crore, and Package-III would revolve around the areas where land acquisition was required.
Tiruchi City Corporation (TCC) had submitted the detailed project report (DPR). However, the DPR was modified to fix the alignment of the road to minimise the need for acquiring land as per the recommendation of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply. Further, tenders are likely to be floated separately for each package.
