Patna is set to launch its first Water Metro service, connecting Digha Ghat to Kangan Ghat.
A Rs 908-crore MoU was signed by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) Chairman Sunil Kumar Singh and Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) Managing Director Nand Kishore in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. The initiative aims to create a safe, modern, and eco-friendly urban water transport system, with plans to use state-of-the-art hybrid electric catamaran vessels, such as the fully air-conditioned 'MV Nishadraj.'
Each vessel can accommodate around 100 passengers, including provisions for wheelchair users, and operates in both battery and hybrid modes for zero carbon emissions. The initial route includes stops at Digha Paryatan Ghat, NIT Ghat, Gai Ghat, and Kangan Ghat.
A trial run is expected soon, with the tourism department planning to expand the network to 10 more locations. Patna is among 18 cities selected for urban water transport development.
