The Indian Navy is likely to begin work on Phase II of Project Sea Bird, the
expansion of the naval base at Karwar in Karnataka as the proposal in this
regard has been cleared by the Union Government.
Phase II of the project is likely to include an airport at Alageri village
near Ankola with the permission of the Union Ministry of Defence. As the Navy
requires more land to expand the airport for civilian purpose, it is waiting for
the state government to acquire more land for the construction of a runway.
For Phase II of the Seabird Project, the Navy is having the required land to
construct and develop the infrastructure. Phase II is expected to have the
dockyard, accommodation for the staff, air base, submarines and helicopters.
