The government plans to complete the construction of the elevated corridor project from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi on the East Coast Road (ECR) within 18 months to ease traffic congestion issues in the area. Until the corridor is completed, road expansion work over the 8.8-km stretch from Thiruvanmiyur to Akkarai will be expedited and completed by April 2025.
Highways Minister E V Velu inspected the work on East Coast Road on 19 August, 2024. The elevated corridor will begin at the TIDEL Park junction and end at Uthandi, passing through key locations such as LB Road junction, Kottivakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, and Akkarai.
Once completed, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time to just 20 minutes. On-ramps and off-ramps will be placed at LB Road junction, Thiruvanmiyur RTO office, and Neelankarai to ensure easy access for local residents. The govrnment has sanctioned 940 crore for the road widening, and the entire project is expected to be completed by April, 2025.
As part of the ongoing expansion of ECR, a vital route connecting Chennai to Kanyakumari, land acquisition for the six-lane road is underway in six villages, including Thiruvanmiyur, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, and Sholinganallur.
