Mumbai
Metropolitan Region Development Authority has identified roads to be upgraded
under the Rs.2,648 crore Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project. The project will
be implemented in three phases and is slated for completion in 2006. The
financing for Phase I will be done as follows:

The project
envisages construction of 14 new flyovers, six elevated roads, eight rail overbridges
and 15 pedestrian subways in the main island. For the eastern suburbs, six
elevated roads, one rail overbridge and eight vehicular subways are being
planned whereas for western suburbs, 17 flyovers, seven rail over bridges and
one vehicular subway will be constructed.
Priority has
been accorded to 35 roads in the eastern suburbs and 22 for the western
suburbs, the work on which will commence by end-2003.
The project also
includes augmentation of the existing road network and removing encroachments
on 250 km stretch of roads. The state government estimates that there are
around 1,900 encroachments in the western and eastern suburbs.

- Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road – six or

- Sahar Road, connecting the Airport
