Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched projects worth Rs 235 crore at Chennai and Kamarajar ports on 08 January, 2026, aimed at modernising infrastructure and improving port operations.
The rollout includes safety upgrades, digital systems, and breakwater works designed to enhance the efficiency and resilience of the ports. At Chennai Port, Minister Sonowal inaugurated several projects, including the repair of a coastal revetment over 850 mtrs., a Rs 43 crore firefighting pump house at the Oil Dock Area, and the modernisation of the port hospital at Rs 8.08 crore. A significant digital upgrade was also launched with the introduction of the Enterprise Business System, a SAP-based platform worth Rs 45 crore that integrates finance, human resources, procurement, and port operations, boosting compliance and operational efficiency.
The upgrades at Kamarajar Port and Chennai Port are expected to improve safety, cargo handling, and overall operational efficiency. Sonowal emphasized that these initiatives are part of the Centre’s broader goal of strengthening coastal safety and ease of doing business.
