Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated the Rs 3,394.49 crore Shahpur Kandi dam project on 05 November, 2025 aimed at enhancing electricity generation and irrigation across the state.
Funded by both the state and Central government, the project will improve water supply for agriculture in the Majha region, particularly benefiting areas like Pathankot, Gurdaspur, and Amritsar. The Shahpur Kandi dam will store water from the Ranjit Sagar dam, increasing power production by optimising its 600 MW capacity.
Additionally, it will ensure irrigation to over 5,000 hectares of land. The project is expected to be fully operational by March 2026, including two powerhouses with a combined capacity of 206 MW. It will also provide employment opportunities for local youth.
