The Punjab government has approved a major project to repair and upgrade over 18,000 km of roads by March 2026.
This new initiative adds to the ongoing work on 12,000 km of roads by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Punjab Mandi Board. Senior officials revealed that tenders for the additional roads have already been floated, with accelerated planning underway to begin the work immediately. The state recently received Rs 3,000 crore from the Central government under the ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment’ scheme, which will be largely allocated for this road infrastructure upgrade.
The efforts aligns with the upcoming Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections, prompting the government to expedite the tendering process before the model code of conduct is enforced.
