The widening of NH-66 in Kerala, a long-pending project, is now scheduled for phased completion between March and August 2026.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) recently revised the timeline, stating that the majority of work will be completed by mid-2024. Currently, 16 stretches covering a total of 422.8 km are under construction. However, the project has faced scrutiny due to several collapses and structural failures on under-construction sections, raising concerns over construction quality and safety. Notably, a section of the highway near Mylakkadu and another near Kooriyad collapsed earlier this year, prompting safety concerns.
In response, the Ministry appointed an expert committee to evaluate vulnerable areas and initiated remedial measures. Additionally, penal actions have been taken against contractors and consultants, and safety audits will be carried out where needed.
