A masterplan for
traffic and transportation in Kolkata has been drawn up, in order to ease the pressure
faced by the city on account of its growing traffic. The masterplan envisages
construction of two ring roads measuring a total length of 400 km around
Kolkata.
The inner ring road would encircle
the Calcutta Metropolitan Area (CMA), stretching from Kalyani in the north to
Baruipur in the south and Barasat in the east to Hooghly in the west.
The outer ring road would be
nearly 100 km away from the core of Kolkata and would connect the districts in
a rough circle around the city.
Short stretches would have to be constructed
to link portions of existing roads to complete the circles around the city. An
additional 66 km of roads would have to be constructed to complete the rings.
The two rings would ease traffic pressure within a radius of 50-70 km of the
city.
According to state urban development minister,
Mr Asok Bhattacharya, the ring road schemes form part of a Rs.16,000 crore
traffic and transportation masterplan for the CMA. The proposal is expected to be
placed before the Metropolitan Planning Committee, which comprises of central and
state government agencies such as the CPWD, PWD, CMDA and the NHAI.
