Work on Border Roads Organisation's
8.8 km Rohtang road tunnel project in Lahul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh
is likely to begin by early 2008 with completion scheduled by 2014.
The use of latest tunnel boring
machines for the Rohtang tunnel in Himachal Pradesh is expected to reduce the
cost (earlier estimates of Rs.1,123 crore) as well as the construction period by
at least a year.
The contract for implementation of the
project is expected to be awarded by end-2007. The consultancy work has already
been awarded to SMEC International, an Australian company which is expected to
soon submit its report recommending the exact technique of boring the tunnel.
