The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a Rs 127 crore project to make the Mysuru-Nanjangud stretch of NH-766 an accident-free corridor. The highway, which connects key interstate routes to Kerala and Tamil Nadu via Gundlupet, is an essential link to popular tourist destinations such as Nanjangud, Bandipur, Ooty, Chamarajanagar, and Wayanad.
NHAI has identified eight black spots along the highway based on accident data from the last three years. To improve safety, a comprehensive plan includes various infrastructural enhancements such as high mast lamps, speed breakers, humped zebra crossings, better junctions, road markings, and warning signs.
The objective is to reduce accidents and prevent vehicles from skidding on this busy stretch. The project involves the construction of multiple overbridges and underpasses to ensure smoother and safer traffic flow.
Key constructions under the project include an overbridge at Yelachageri in Nanjangud taluk, underbridge near Kalale gate, underpass near Hosahalli for light motor vehicles, a separate underpass for pedestrians and light vehicles at Kadakola, two underpasses near Bandipalya APMC, and another underpass near Ganapathi Sachidananda Ashram, and additional underpasses near Kempaiahhundi and Bannikuppe.
According to NHAI's Chief Engineer, Rahul Kumar Gupta, construction has begun in phases, with initial works on the underpasses and overbridge underway. Contractors have been assigned the work, and the project is expected to be completed in multiple stages.
