To accelerate the development of technical textiles, Rs 1,480 crore has been allocated to the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) for 2020-21 to 2025-26.
The Mission focuses on four core areas: research and development, market promotion, export promotion, and education and skill development. It encourages innovation in technical textiles by supporting new materials and processes while fostering international collaborations.
While traditional textiles remain vital, the emergence of technical textiles is transforming the industry by prioritising functionality over aesthetics. These specialised fabrics cater to industries such as automotive, construction, agriculture, healthcare, and safety, enhancing durability, safety, and efficiency in applications ranging from automobile components to medical equipment and protective gear. With twelve distinct segments, technical textiles are revolutionising multiple sectors.
India’s textile industry contributes around two percent to GDP and holds a 3.9 percent share in global textile exports, ranking as the sixth-largest exporter.
