The long-delayed Rs 414-crore Kuthambakkam mofussil bus terminal near Thiruvallur is nearing completion and is expected to become operational in the coming months.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is finalising the appointment of a private concessionaire to manage the terminal under a 15-year public-private partnership (PPP) model. Spread over 24.8 acres, the terminal is designed as a major hub for west-bound buses operated by TNSTC and MTC. It will include facilities such as 136 bus bays, 64 idle bays, 44 commercial shops, dormitories, public amenities, and an additional 9-acre space for idle bus parking and a police station.
Connectivity will be improved through a newly constructed 36-mtrs.-wide, 2.2-km access road from NH-4, adding 18.2 acres to the total project footprint of 52 acres. The selected concessionaire must form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) under the Companies Act before signing the agreement. A mandatory 15-day trial run will precede official operations.
The concessionaire will manage all terminal functions and may sub-license services like security or parking, but remains fully accountable for service delivery.
