A long-delayed infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in Tripunithura, near Kochi, is finally moving forward. The Rs 672-crore project to widen the 13-km SN Junction–Poothotta stretch into a four-lane road has been revived after nearly a decade of stagnation.
The Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) has completed the crucial realignment process, paving the way for immediate land acquisition. Originally introduced in the 2017 state budget, the delay in implementation worsened congestion in the growing residential hub. As per MLA K Babu, land acquisition is set to begin soon. The revised plan includes development at nine key junctions—such as Kizhakkekotta, Nadakkavu, Kannankulangara, and Udayamperoor, along with the addition of 12 bus bays to improve traffic flow and public transport efficiency. The land required has increased from 12.62 hectares to 13.12 hectares post-realignment.
A social impact study has been conducted, with a follow-up needed for the newly added land area. With Rs 450 crore already allocated from KIIFB, KRFB officials expect land acquisition to proceed swiftly once surveyor availability improves. Once completed, the corridor is expected to cut travel times, improve road safety, and provide major relief to commuters and local residents.
