The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has sanctioned Rs 951.27 crore for the construction of a 29.03 km long bypass in Tura, West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. The project aims to ease traffic congestion in Tura town, the district headquarters, and enhance road safety in urban zones by diverting through-traffic away from the densely populated areas.
Announced by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari via a social media post, the bypass will be constructed as a two-lane road with paved shoulders. It will connect National Highway 127B with National Highway 217, formerly known as NH-51, which is the principal route linking Guwahati to Dalu on the international border with Bangladesh. The new alignment will begin near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217.
The existing NH-217 currently runs through the urban core of Tura, a stretch marked by narrow roads and heavy traffic. The bypass is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and ensure safer and more efficient mobility by segregating local and through traffic.
