Steel Authority of India, on 28 June
2006, approved an expansion project for its Salem Steel Plant in Tamil Nadu at
an estimated cost of Rs.1,553 crore.
The expansion plan envisages
installation of steel making facilities, including a continuous slab caster, and
expansion of the plant's cold rolling capacity. The new steel making facility
will have a capacity to produce 1.8 lakh tpa of stainless steel slabs. Besides,
SSP's cold rolling mill capacity will go up from 65,000 tpa to 1.46 lakh tpa.
The capacity addition is scheduled for
completion within 36 months.
