The proposed Shamli–Gorakhpur Expressway in Uttar Pradesh has taken a major step forward with the completion of its detailed project report (DPR).
The 750-km, six-lane expressway, estimated to cost around Rs 35,000 crore, is planned as a high-speed corridor linking western Uttar Pradesh with eastern districts near the Nepal border. To be implemented under the supervision of the National Highways Authority of India, with responsibility assigned to its Roorkee unit, the project is described as a “backbone link” for the state. Once completed within an expected three-year timeline, the expressway is set to significantly reduce travel time and improve access to Delhi, Dehradun and Mussoorie.
Land acquisition has begun, drone surveys are complete, and Gazette notifications will be issued in phases. The planned expressway will traverse 22 districts, including Bijnor, Amroha, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Shamli, Rampur, Bareilly, Sitapur, Lucknow, Bahraich, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Gorakhpur. It will connect with five major routes — Ganga Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Lucknow-Gorakhpur Expressway, Ambala-Shamli Expressway, and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway — making travel between Lucknow and Delhi much more convenient.
