The 92-km Mysuru–Kushalnagar four-lane highway project is advancing steadily, with significant progress on key stretches under construction. Work is currently underway on a 19-km section from Agrahara in Srirangapatna to Yalachanahalli in Mysuru taluk, as well as another stretch from Belthur in Hunsur taluk to Harave Mallarajapattana in Periyapatna taluk.
The Central government’s recent approval of Package 3 has injected fresh momentum into the project and is expected to greatly enhance connectivity in the Mysuru–Madikeri corridor. According to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, “the new alignment will start at Mysuru and end near Srirangapatna, linking up with the Bengaluru–Mysuru National Highway 275.” The new highway aims to reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Madikeri considerably, offering a faster, more efficient alternative to the existing route. The route has been planned to pass primarily through agricultural and dry lands, a decision aimed at minimising environmental and social disruption.
The highway project was initially proposed in 2018 when then Member of Parliament Prathap Simha secured approval from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for a Mysuru–Madikeri four-lane highway. However, environmental concerns near the Kushalnagar region prompted a revision, resulting in the present Mysuru–Kushalnagar alignment. The project gathered momentum after the bhoomi puja (ground-breaking ceremony) held on 12 March 2023, during the inauguration of the Bengaluru–Mysuru Highway at Gejjalagere.
Once completed, the Mysuru–Kushalnagar highway is expected to become a critical link, improving regional connectivity, promoting tourism, and contributing to the economic development of Kodagu and surrounding districts.
