The Tamil Nadu Government has chalked out around Rs 1,260 crore to clean up
and restore the Cooum river. The length of the river is about 65 km, of which 18
km is in the city limits.
The Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) is traversed by three rivers -
Kosathaliyar, Cooum and Adyar rivers. These rivers are an integral part of the
natural drainage system. The river banks are heavily encroached upon by the
homeless and by the city's fringe businesses thereby grossly reducing the
capacity of these water bodies. Effluents and solid waste are dumped into these
rivers resulting in heavy pollution of waterways.
A new trust - Chennai City Waterways Trust - has been formed to carry out
preliminary works.
