National Thermal Power Corporation has
commissioned a 500 MW unit at its Talcher thermal power project at Kaniha in
Angul district of Orissa. With this, the total capacity of the plant stands at
3,000 MW.
NTPC had embarked on this Rs.8,700 crore
expansion project that involved the setting up of four units of 500 MW each, in
January 2000. The plant already had two units of 500 MW in operation, before the
expansion plan was launched.
The first three units of the expansion project
were commissioned in February 2003, November 2003 and May 2004, respectively.
The entire project has been completed one year
ahead of its original scheduled completion date of 28 February 2006.
