To position Chennai as a global sports destination, the Tamil Nadu government will develop a world-class sports city on 42 acres at a cost of Rs 261 crore.
The project, spearheaded by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) in coordination with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), aims to provide top-tier training facilities and infrastructure in line with international sports standards. The city will feature a large stadium, FIFA-standard football field, cycle track, swimming pool, and specialized facilities for sports like shooting, archery, and water sports, including rowing and kayaking. The sports hub will also include athlete housing, commercial spaces, parks, jogging paths, and a rainwater conservation system.
Located along the Old Mahabalipuram Road, near Sathyabama Institute, the facility is set to be completed by 2027. Chief Minister M K Stalin first announced the plan in 2022 as part of a vision to elevate Tamil Nadu’s presence in the global sports arena.
