Tata Power is in discussions with the Odisha government to establish a 10 GW ingots and wafers manufacturing plant, estimated to cost around Rs 10,000 crore.
With a current capacity of 4.55 GW for solar cells and modules, Tata Power aims to integrate ingot and wafer production into its solar panel manufacturing for both domestic and export markets. Ingots and wafers are crucial raw materials for solar cells and semiconductor chips. The company is considering Gopalpur and Cuttack as potential sites, both offering port proximity.
Tata Power's CEO, Praveer Sinha, emphasized that the backward integration will meet both its own needs and the broader industry demand. The project remains in the early stages of planning. He said, "Tata Power believes there will be enough supply of cells and modules, given the demand-supply scenario in the country."
